POATE 2025: Uganda Showcases Culture, Innovation, and Sustainability at Speke Resort Munyonyo
KAMPALA, UGANDA — On May 21, 2025, as dawn breaks over Lake Victoria, the newly expanded Speke Resort Convention Centre in Munyonyo comes alive with the vibrant sights and sounds of the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE) 2025. Running until May 24, this ninth edition of the annual event, hosted by the Uganda Tourism Board, is themed “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation” and aims to spotlight Uganda’s natural wonders, cultural richness, and tourism innovations on the global stage.

Set against the tranquil shores of Lake Victoria, the Speke Resort provides a breathtaking setting for the premier tourism and travel trade fair. The newly built convention center, a modern architectural marvel, hums with activity as global delegates, local entrepreneurs, and industry pioneers gather to celebrate Uganda’s tourism sector. The resort’s lush landscapes mirror the expo’s emphasis on eco-tourism—one of its central pillars, alongside cultural heritage and adventure tourism.
From the outset, POATE 2025 immerses visitors in a showcase of Uganda’s diverse offerings. Interactive displays highlight iconic experiences like gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the thunderous Murchison Falls, and Kampala’s bustling markets. A London-based delegate, Sarah Thompson, is thrilled by a virtual reality safari through Queen Elizabeth National Park. “It feels like I’m standing among the elephants,” she exclaims, marveling at the lifelike simulation. This blend of technology and tradition exemplifies the expo’s goal to redefine modern travel.
Uganda’s cultural identity shines brightly throughout the event. Traditional performers captivate audiences with the energetic Kiganda dance, while local artisans exhibit beadwork, woven crafts, and other handmade treasures. Culinary experiences abound, with chefs serving up local favorites such as luwombo—steamed meat and vegetables wrapped in banana leaves. “This is Uganda’s soul on display,” says Maria Nakintu, a proud local exhibitor. The expo culminates in a cultural festival on May 24, featuring live performances by celebrated acts like Blu 3 and the Abeeka Band, igniting social media buzz across platforms.
Sustainability remains a consistent theme. Thought-provoking discussions focus on eco-lodges, conservation efforts, and community-based tourism. A Uganda Tourism Board session emphasizes how tourism revenues are vital in protecting endangered species such as mountain gorillas. “We’re not just promoting destinations,” a spokesperson notes. “We’re shaping a future where tourism empowers communities and safeguards our environment.”
The festival day on May 24 transforms Speke Resort into a lively celebration of Uganda’s artistic spirit. Music, dance, fashion, and visual arts take centre stage, while a colourful boat regatta on Lake Victoria offers a stunning spectacle. Attendees share their joy on X, with posts capturing the festival’s energy and applauding Uganda’s warm hospitality. One post reads, “Energy high. Spirits higher. Tourism takes the lead,” reflecting the electric atmosphere of the event.
As POATE 2025 continues, Speke Resort Munyonyo stands as a beacon of Uganda’s rising status in global tourism. Through a dynamic blend of innovation, cultural pride, and sustainable vision, the expo invites the world to “Explore Uganda” and connect with the heartbeat of the Pearl of Africa.
