POATE 2025: Uganda Shines as a Cultural and Tourism Powerhouse
SPEKE RESORT MUNYONYO, KAMPALA— The Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE) 2025 concluded on May 24, 2025, with a vibrant grand finale celebrating Uganda’s diverse cultural heritage and immense tourism potential. The multi-day event attracted a global audience of exhibitors, hosted buyers, and tourism stakeholders, culminating in a night filled with traditional performances, music, and fashion that captivated everyone in attendance.

Uganda’s Minister of State for Tourism, Hon. Bahinduka Mugarra Martin, expressed his appreciation on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “It’s my pleasure to thank every individual that participated in the Expo—the organizers, partners, exhibitors, sponsors, and media—for making this yet another successful showcase of Uganda. Let’s continue to tell the Ugandan story and market the tourism gem that Uganda really is.” His message was accompanied by stunning visuals of Ngoma drummers dressed in white, delivering powerful rhythms, and models showcasing striking designs by local streetwear brand ORM, known for blending contemporary fashion with cultural elements.
Set against the picturesque backdrop of palm-lined grounds, the Expo featured an array of B2B and B2C engagements, industry symposiums, and networking sessions. A standout moment was the cultural showcase at the Ndere Cultural Centre, where dancers in vibrant costumes moved to the traditional beats of the engalabi and empuunya drums—iconic instruments historically used in Buganda royal ceremonies. “The energy of the Ngoma drums felt like a heartbeat connecting us all,” shared Aisha Namutebi, a first-time visitor from Nairobi. “It made me proud to be African.”
The fashion segment further highlighted Uganda’s rising influence in the global fashion scene. Models graced the runway in colorful ensembles ranging from geometric-patterned vests to checkered outerwear—symbolizing the nation’s creative expression and appetite for progress. Designer Robert Okello, the visionary behind ORM, remarked, “Fashion here is a language of change,” as his fusion of tradition and modernity drew enthusiastic applause.
POATE 2025 also offered familiarization trips for hosted buyers, including hot air balloon safaris and explorations of local craft markets. These experiences were part of a broader effort to challenge outdated perceptions of African destinations and position Uganda as a leading hub of cultural and natural wealth.
As the Expo came to a close with lively celebrations deep into the night, attendees departed feeling inspired and eager to share the unique story of Uganda with the world.
