IGP Byakagaba Assures Ugandans of Security Ahead of 2026 General Election
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abas Byakagaba has reassured Ugandans that security agencies are fully prepared to guarantee peace and order during the 2026 General Election.

In a statement issued on Thursday, September 18, 2025, Byakagaba noted that the Uganda Police Force (UPF), in coordination with other security organs and stakeholders, has put in place deliberate measures to ensure a safe and smooth electoral process.
“We have entered a critical stage of the electoral cycle as the Electoral Commission begins nominating candidates for various positions. This will soon be followed by campaigns across the country. The UPF has already taken concrete steps to secure the general elections,” he said.
Byakagaba urged both political actors and citizens to exercise their freedoms responsibly while respecting the rights of others, emphasizing that the law will remain fully enforceable throughout the election period.
“All political activities must be conducted within the framework of the law. Electoral malpractice, traffic violations, incitement to violence, hooliganism, computer misuse, destruction of property, and spreading false information will not be tolerated,” he warned.
He further appealed to Ugandans to act as “ambassadors of peace” and resist manipulation by groups or individuals seeking to incite violence.
“Let your creativity and energy be directed towards building a brighter future,” he encouraged, adding that Uganda’s progress in socio-economic transformation is anchored on sustained peace.
The IGP also called on the media to report accurately and responsibly, cautioning against misinformation and disinformation during the campaign season.
Reaffirming his commitment, Byakagaba stated, “The Uganda Police Force remains committed to safeguarding the entire electoral process in collaboration with all stakeholders. Let us remain alert and resist negative elements that may attempt to disrupt the elections. We shall continue to maintain open channels of communication.”
