Uganda Cranes Thrash Mozambique to Keep World Cup Hopes Alive

The Uganda Cranes produced a scintillating second-half performance to dismantle Mozambique 4–0 in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier played on Friday night at the fully packed Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The victory, one of Uganda’s most commanding displays in recent years, lifted the Cranes to second place in Group G with 12 points, keeping their World Cup dream alive. They now trail leaders Algeria, who have 18 points, by six.

Okello Breaks the Deadlock

After a goalless first half in which Uganda wasted several chances, Allan Okello broke the deadlock just four minutes into the second half. The playmaker unleashed a thunderous left-footed strike from a distance after being teed up by Jude Ssemugabi. The goal set the tone for a dominant half in which Okello would play a starring role.

Mato’s Redemption

Forward Rogers. Mato, who endured a frustrating opening period with missed opportunities, turned the game on its head in the latter stages. He struck twice in quick succession—first in the 70th minute with a clinical finish, and again in the 84th after latching onto Okello’s clever pass.

Mato’s brace not only restored his confidence but also showcased his growing importance to the Cranes’ attack.

Okello the Architect

If Mato provided the goals, Okello was undoubtedly the architect. The midfielder capped off his brilliant night with two assists. His inch-perfect delivery from a corner in the 90th minute was met by defender Elio Capradossi, who rose highest to nod home Uganda’s fourth goal, sending the Namboole crowd into raptures.

Missed Chances

Despite the emphatic scoreline, Uganda could have won by an even larger margin. Both Ssemugabi and Steven Mukwala spurned gilt-edged chances that would have further buried Mozambique. Still, the Cranes’ ruthless second-half display was enough to underline their intent to challenge for top spot in the group.

Group Standings

The result leaves Uganda tied on 12 points with Mozambique but ahead on goal difference. Guinea follows closely with 10 points, and Botswana with nine, while Somalia remains rooted at the bottom with a single point.

Only the group winners will secure automatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be staged in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The stakes are therefore sky-high as the qualifiers enter the decisive stage.

Next Fixture

Uganda will not have much time to rest. The Cranes return to action on Monday, once again at Namboole, where they will host Somalia in another must-win encounter. Victory would keep them firmly in contention for World Cup qualification and sustain the momentum gained from Friday’s stunning triumph.
