MUBENDE—President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who also serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), presided over the passing-out ceremony of 413 officers who successfully completed an advanced armored warfare course at the Uganda Military Academy in Kabamba, Mubende District.

The group of graduates comprises 74 Armour Platoon Commanders, 122 Armour Technicians, and 217 Armour Crew members. Over the course of six months, these officers were trained in sophisticated military tactics and armored warfare operations.

During the ceremony, President Museveni congratulated the officers for completing the intensive training and commended them for acquiring the necessary expertise to operate and manage military tanks effectively.

He emphasized the importance of strategic integration in modern warfare, urging the officers to approach military operations with a holistic mindset.

“War is both an ancient science and an ancient art,” the President said. “Science, represented by the equipment, and art, reflected in how you are organized and use that equipment. The science always informs the tactics and organization.”

He further cautioned the graduates about emerging threats to tank warfare, particularly from air power and modern technologies such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). He urged them to remain adaptable and proactive in enhancing their defence capabilities.

“The tank now faces advanced threats like UAVs and improved air force capabilities. Therefore, we must rethink how we package and deploy our defence capacity,” Museveni said.

The President also advised the officers to prioritize their personal health and integrity. “You must love yourselves by avoiding diseases, alcohol, and drugs. Stay healthy. Also, take care of your equipment. A corrupt soldier is not just your enemy but also a threat to the country. In times of war, negligence or corruption can be fatal,” he warned.

President Museveni reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernizing the UPDF and praised the military leadership for its efforts in professionalizing the force. “We’ve been developing infrastructure like barracks and training schools. I’m pleased with the continued focus on welfare, training, and facility development,” he noted.

Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding echoed the President’s sentiments, revealing that the UPDF is actively upgrading its military schools into centers of excellence. He stated that 14 institutions, including the Uganda Military Academy—Kabamba, have already achieved this status.

He also called on the graduates to uphold discipline and professionalism and avoid destructive behaviors.

Brig. Gen. Peter Chandia, Commandant of the Armored Warfare Training School—Karama, highlighted that the trainees had gained strong skills in mechanized warfare, including mastery in firepower and mobility. He affirmed their readiness to deploy armored tactics effectively in modern combat situations.

The event concluded with the recognition of outstanding students who excelled during the course.
