Uganda Airlines has officially made its debut in Europe, successfully completing its inaugural flight to the United Kingdom—a significant milestone in the national carrier’s international expansion.

The historic journey was made aboard the Airbus A330-800neo, which departed Entebbe International Airport at 10:05 a.m. on Sunday and landed at London Gatwick Airport, marking the airline’s first direct route to Europe.

Leading a high-level Ugandan delegation on the maiden flight was Minister of Works and Transport Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala. The launch of the London route comes five years after the airline’s revival and represents a pivotal moment in its efforts to expand globally.

Among the dignitaries aboard the flight were Francis Mwebesa, Minister of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives, along with representatives from Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), and the Presidential Advisory Committee on Exports and Industrial Development (PACIED), among others.

UK High Commissioner to Uganda Kate Airey also joined the flight, describing the launch of the direct route as a timely and strategic development in Uganda–UK relations. “There is no better time to inaugurate a direct flight than now, when both countries are committed to strengthening trade and economic partnerships,” she said. Airey also noted that members of the British Chamber of Commerce were aboard the flight, keen to seize new opportunities for trade and investment.

Upon landing in London, the Ugandan delegation was warmly received by members of the Ugandan diaspora. Dressed in traditional attire and waving national flags, the diaspora community welcomed the visitors with hugs and cheers in celebration of the national milestone.

During the flight, Gen. Wamala emphasized the purpose of the mission. “We are not going to London to ask for donations—we are going to seek investment,” he stated. “Our delegation will be engaging directly with potential investors. We have what the UK and the world need. Go out there and promote trade—do not return empty-handed.”

Ramathan Ggoobi, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, highlighted the broader significance of the new route. “This connection will not only boost tourism and business but also enhance knowledge and technology transfer. We are working on multiple investment initiatives and plan to expand to other global destinations in the near future,” he said.

Uganda Airlines CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki expressed her gratitude to the various partners and stakeholders who helped bring the route to life. “As we launch this important route, I encourage travelers between Uganda and the UK to choose Uganda Airlines,” she said.

The airline will operate four flights per week to London Gatwick, enhancing connectivity and creating new opportunities for trade, tourism, and investment.

Senior Captains Sam Masaba and Clive Okoth piloted the inaugural flight, symbolizing the professionalism and readiness of Uganda Airlines as it ventures into new international territory.
