The Ugandan government has assured guests attending the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G77+China summits in Kampala of seamless communication with the implementation of reliable and faster internet infrastructure. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, announced that the government has set up robust internet infrastructure, providing the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology for enhanced speed and efficiency.

The NAM Summit, scheduled for January 15th -20th 2024 at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala, aims to bring together global leaders to address pressing global issues and foster cooperation among member nations. Following this, the Third South Summit will take place from January 20-23, 2024, in Kampala, under the theme “Leaving No One Behind,” with a focus on enhancing cooperation among the 134 member States of the Group of 77 (G-77).

Minister Baryomunsi emphasized that the ICT infrastructure laid down by the National Information Technology Authority of Uganda (NITA-U) will provide guests with Wi-Fi 6, the next generation of Wi-Fi technology. Wi-Fi 6 not only offers faster speeds but also facilitates easier and quicker communication.

Baryomunsi reassured that the internet infrastructure established for the summits will remain intact for public use after the events. Additionally, plans are underway to extend similar infrastructure to other parts of the country, contributing to the nation’s long-term development.

Addressing concerns about the availability of certain communication channels, Baryomunsi mentioned that Facebook remains restricted for now, and guests are encouraged to use alternative digital communication channels. He clarified that ongoing engagements between the government and Facebook administration are focused on ensuring compliance with the rules governing Uganda and the avoidance of engaging in partisan politics.

According to Baryomunsi, the move to enhance internet infrastructure aligns with the government’s broader vision to improve connectivity and digital communication across the country, promoting technological advancements and facilitating widespread access to high-quality internet services.
