Uganda Cranes Return to Africa’s Biggest Stage
The Uganda Cranes have secured a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals after missing the last two editions. With a strong performance under coach Paul Put, the team finished second in Group K, earning 13 points through four wins, one draw, and one loss.
Ugandan football fans are celebrating the triumphant return of the Uganda Cranes to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals after missing out on the previous two editions in 2021 and 2023, held in Cameroon and Ivory Coast, respectively.
For the first time in several years, Uganda’s qualification was not dependent on last-minute mathematical scenarios or the performance of rival teams.
The Cranes earned their place through a commanding performance, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s qualification history.
In the six matches of the campaign, Uganda recorded four wins, one draw, and one loss, accumulating 13 points to secure second place in Group K, just one point behind group leaders South Africa.
This impressive achievement included a remarkable away performance, where the team garnered seven points through victories against Congo (1-0) and South Sudan (2-1), as well as a 2-2 draw against South Africa. At home, Uganda secured six points with wins over Congo (2-0) and South Sudan (1-0). Their only defeat came against South Africa (2-0) at Namboole Stadium.
This solid performance highlights the exceptional leadership of veteran Belgian tactician Paul Put and the dedication of the Uganda Cranes players in securing their return to Africa’s premier football stage.
Fans of the Uganda Cranes can now look forward with anticipation to the team’s participation in the final tournament, which will be held in Morocco at the end of next year.
