South Korean President Extends Invitation to President Museveni for Korea-Africa Summit in 2024

The South Korean President, H.E. Yoon Suk Yeol, on 30th June 2023 extended an invitation to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda to attend the Korea-Africa Summit in Seoul in May 2024. The invitation was conveyed by Mr. Sungmin Jang, Special Envoy of the South Korean President.

The South Korean President, H.E. Yoon Suk Yeol, on 30th June 2023 sent an invitation to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to attend the Korea-Africa Summit, which is slated to take place in Seoul in May 2024.

The invitation was included in a special message that Mr. Sungmin Jang, Special Envoy of the South Korean Leader and Senior Secretary to the President on Future Strategy, addressed to President Museveni on 30th June 2023 at State House-Entebbe.

The Special Envoy was accompanied by the Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, Prime Minister of Uganda, and H.E. Sung-Soo Park, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Uganda.

The Special Envoy was warmly welcomed to Uganda by President Museveni, who also gladly accepted his counterpart’s invitation to the Korea-Africa summit.

However, President Museveni reaffirmed his desire for the Korean Peninsula to unite peacefully.

“We sincerely hope that Korea will one day be united, just as it was with Germany and Vietnam. I sincerely want you to be together through a peaceful unification of Korea, because I like peace,” he said.

The quick transformation of the Republic of Korea pleased President Museveni, who also told the envoy that Uganda is prepared to cooperate with both North and South Korea because Uganda upholds peaceful coexistence.

“I commend the Republic of Korea for changing quickly. We don’t take sides, therefore we are prepared to engage with North Korea as well as with you, he stated.

The President also let the Special Envoy know that Uganda is open and prepared to receive Korean business organisations.

On his part, Mr. Sungmin Jang, the Special Envoy, expressed his tremendous joy at making his first trip to Uganda and hailed President Museveni for his inspiring leadership and superb economic policies, which are currently propelling the nation’s economy to new heights. He said, “6% economic growth is a significant number.

To further develop and bolster the 60-year-old economic cooperation between the two nations, Mr. Jang also urged for the opening of the Ugandan Embassy in Korea. He continued by saying that the Republic of Korea and Uganda share similar ideals in many areas, which should be taken advantage of for the benefit of the citizens of the two friendly nations.
