Kabaka Run 2025: A Rainy Celebration of Health, Unity, and Royalty

Thousands braved the morning rain to take part in the annual Kabaka Run at the Lubiri in Mengo, honoring Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II as he celebrates his 70th birthday. Themed “Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child,” this year’s run emphasized men’s role in the fight against HIV/AIDS. With race categories for all fitness levels and vibrant participation from the public and leaders alike, the event blended fitness, fun, and a powerful message of community health.

As per tradition, participants gathered at the Lubiri (the Kabaka’s Palace) in Mengo as early as 6:00 am. Upon arrival, they took part in a warm-up session before being officially flagged off by Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, who is celebrating his 70th birthday this month.
The Kabaka Run serves a dual purpose: it celebrates His Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda and brings attention to Uganda’s ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS.
This year’s theme, “Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child,” emphasizes the vital role men play in reducing HIV transmission and protecting the well-being of young girls.
The event offered 5km, 10km, and 21km race categories, accommodating participants of all fitness levels. Each participant wore a kit purchased for SH20,000, which included a red vest with white lettering and sleeves, a water bottle, and a small bag.
Despite the rain that started around 7:00 am, thousands of participants demonstrated impressive determination by pushing through the weather. Some came prepared with umbrellas, while others embraced the rainfall, finding it refreshing.
Attendees didn’t just run in the rain—they also took part in playful activities. Many made the most of the wet grounds by playing football, while a few, having had a few drinks, amusingly treated the muddy puddles like their own personal bathtubs.
The event also drew leaders from different levels, including representatives from the Buganda Kingdom, local government, and the central government.
